Common wood floor issues
-
Yellowing timber floor
This occurs when the pigments, tannins and other resins in timber are exposed to air and UV light.
Over time this will cause yellowing in light timbers, while darker timbers usually develop rich brown or pink red tones and uncoated timbers will grey or silver.
Oxidisation is a natural process, and the effect is noted in both coated and uncoated timber.
The degree to which timber will change colour depends on the extent of its exposure to direct and indirect UV light and will vary from species to species.

SCRATCHES AND SCUFF MARKS OF FLOORS
All finished timber floors if poorly looked after will be prone to scratches and scuffing.
One of the causes of scratches or scuffing to a wood floor is sand or dirt. If they get onto your flooring and are walked upon then they can damage your floor.

The other common reason for the scratch on the floor is caused by furniture. Chairs are among the furniture that can cause the most common damage to the floors from the constant movement and weight put on them every day. Dragging furniture such as a fridge, heavy table, or sofa across a wood floor will also damage the floor.

CONTAMINATION UNDER CARPETS
Did you pull the carpet and find unexpected contamination?

People often removed carpets and found some stains on the wood floor. We have experienced that most of the contaminated timber floors were looking like new after sanding off the top layer of the floors.

Some contaminants are from spills of drinks, wine, pet urine, or from unknown sources that the customer never knew until they removed the carpets.

BURN MARKS ON WOOD FLOORS
At time to time, we have customers that has burn marks on their kitchen floors.

This issue is a tricky one, we often remove the burn marks by sanding the wood planks, however, the burn marks can go deep inside of the wooden floors. In this case, we have to replace the timber floor boards. When you hired timber floor sanders, this is the best time to replace the planks, so they can be replaced and sanded at the same time. Once they are coated with new finishing after sanding, they will be not much noticable.

Here is a video that shows how we replaced the floor boards with burn marks.

WOOD FLOOR DIY SANDING FAILURE
This is a common issue that some customers or the previous owners of the properties have done DIY floor sanding unprofessionally.

There are two common issues we have seen many times.
The first issue is sanding marks. When the sanding equipment is used incorrectly, it can leave marks. Sanding tools such as a drum sander, rotary sander, edger and other power tools can damage the timber easily. Once the damage has occurred, sanding needs to be done again to remove the marks, which reduces its re-sandable life time depending on how baddly the damage was made.

The second common issue from DIY is applying finishing product incorrectly. There are some procedures to apply finishing on the timber floors. You can see on the below photo that the existing coating was not properly sanded off before apply a new finishing.

WATER DAMAGED WOOD FLOOR
There are two common appearances which are called cupping and crowning caused by water damage or high humidity areas.
When the top layer of the timber floor expends more than the lower part of the plank, it will lead the centre of the board to expand higher than both ends. This is called crowning. The common reason for this issue is using wet mobs for cleaning.

The other case is called cupping. Both sides of the timber boards are higher than their centre. The common cause for this issue is high humidity in the lower part of the boards, so the lower part expends more than the top layer of the planks. It could be caused by liquid spills or other sources of moisture (gardening water, swimming pool, water leaks, etc) that stay longer at the lower layers of the timber floor.

Another problem from the water damage is expended gaps between the timber boards. The solution is depending on how much damage the boards already had. Some water damages could be solved by sanding and polishing services, but some cases require the replacement of the boards.
