Black Japan — The Premium Dark Floor
Black Japan is experiencing a revival in Perth. The dramatic, deep-toned finish transforms Jarrah, Marri, Wandoo and Tasmanian Oak into gallery-quality dark floors. Popular in Japandi, industrial and modern heritage homes across City Beach, Mount Pleasant, Fremantle and Subiaco.
We use OSMO 3590 Black — a superior alternative to traditional Black Japan stains. Unlike spirit-based stains that sit on top of the timber, OSMO penetrates the grain, producing a deeper, more natural result that can be spot-repaired if scratched.
OSMO Colour Range — 120+ Shades
OSMO offers over 120 unique colours through their Oil Stain and Polyx-Oil Tints ranges. From white wash to charcoal, honey to graphite — we can match any interior design vision. Custom colour mixing is available for architects and designers who need exact colour specifications.
Why OSMO Staining?
- Repairable: Spot-fix scratches without sanding the entire floor — the #1 advantage over traditional stains
- Food-safe certified: EN 71.3 certified, safe for kitchens and children
- Breathable: Microporous finish that moves with your timber in Perth's climate
- High coverage: 1 litre covers approximately 30m²
- Low VOC: Safe for families and pets during application
Staining Process
Staining is applied after sanding and before the final protective coat. The timber must be properly prepared — any remaining old finish, contamination or uneven sanding will show through the stain. This is why professional preparation matters.
We recommend a site visit to assess your timber species, condition and discuss colour options in person. The $110 assessment fee is credited to your job if you proceed.
Common Staining Questions
Will Black Japan show scratches? Dark floors show dust and light scratches more than natural finishes. We recommend satin or matt OSMO topcoats (not gloss) and felt pads on all furniture. The advantage of OSMO is that scratches can be spot-repaired without re-sanding.
Can you stain any timber species? Yes, but results vary by species. Jarrah takes Black Japan beautifully. Pine and Tasmanian Oak produce a more uniform dark tone. We show you samples during the site visit.
How much does staining cost? Staining is quoted as an add-on to the sanding and finishing scope. Every floor is different — book a site visit for an accurate quote.
